Danton Pleads Guilty

From canada.com: "Former St. Louis Blues player Mike Danton admitted Friday that he sought to have his agent killed as part of a plot that unravelled when the would-be hit man turned out to be a police informant."

His codefendant and alleged accomplice Katie Wolfmeyer pleaded not guilty.

This has, obviously, been one of the weirdest sports stories of the year, and it came just when Blues fans thought they'd gotten the last of their bad news for the 2003/04 season. I'm kind of surprised that Danton's copping to this in court, given the initial denials we got from everybody involved, roundly contradicting everything from the putative facts of the case to Danton's family ties. Still, it didn't seem like he was going to beat this rap, no matter what his plea.

You always hear about people unknowingly trying to hire undercover cops to commit murder-for-hire. It makes me wonder how many hired killings are successfully carried out every year, where no one's charged with — or even suspected of — a crime. Here's the espn.com version of the same story.
