There's a cute little
article in yesterday's New York Times on the unique personality type required to play in goal — even as a wee tyke. The accompanying
photograph (by Ozier Muhammad) of nine-year-old goalie Dana DeMartino and her ex-goalie dad is great.
"Goalies are, of course, human targets," says Bruce Weber, the author of the article. I understand the point he's making, but are netminders really "targets" on the ice? It seems to me that the goal is the shooter's target, and the goalie's what gets between them. I mean, no one would shoot the puck at a goalie who played in the face-off circle, right?
Well, maybe his coach would.
Anyway, maybe this is nitpicky, but should not the
Times be nitpicky about diction?
