The Washington Capitals' captain Jeff Halpern will
miss tonight's game at Carolina in observance of Yom Kippur, the holiest of Jewish holidays.
"I don't think there's any question what I should do," he said.
The
Post article linked above cites Red Wings defenseman Mathieu Schneider, but does not mention he's the all-time leading Jewish scorer in NHL history (556 points). According to both
Wikipedia and
Jews In Sports, Schneider and Halpern are two of only three Jewish players in the league. The third is Mike Cammalleri.
Like Halpern did for the first five years of his career,
Iceburgh the Penguin — reputed to be the NHL's
"only Jewish mascot" — has the night off.
