Game Called on Account of Seizure

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer had a seizure on the bench during the first period of tonight's game against Nashville. The tough Czech's heart was stopped, according to coach Mike Babcock, and a team doctor used CPR and a defibrillator to restore him.

The game has been postponed, with no makeup date scheduled so far.

Wings captain Steve Yzerman said "I can't remember anything like that," forgetting that scary incident in game two of the Wings' 1998 playoff series against St. Louis, when Blues captain Chris Pronger took a puck to the chest and collapsed. Or maybe he just didn't think this was like that. Which is fair, it is kind of different.

ESPN reports that " Fischer was diagnosed with a heart abnormality in September 2002, causing him to miss two days of practice. The problem was found on an electrocardiogram as part of a routine battery of tests during the Red Wings' preseason physicals. When the result was abnormal, Fischer was given a stress test that he passed."

Fischer has been listed in stable condition at an unnamed hospital.
