Anti-American Sentiment

Bucking the stereotype that Canadians are "polite," Canadian fans at the World Junior Hockey Championship relentlessly booed the U.S. squad during their games against the Czech and Russian teams.

Pete McMartin wrote in the National Post that the heckling was "disgraceful."

Writing for the Tyee, Charles Campbell said the American kids deserved it.

Sports Illustrated's Allan Muir says the merciless taunting was meant in the nicest way possible.

The Edmonton Journal's Dan Barnes called the episode "embarrassing," noting that "the genius at the controls of the [scoreboard] egged them on by flashing 'U Suck America.' Classy."

Lost in much of the discussion is any reference to defenseman Jack Johnson's New Year's Eve elbow to the head of Canadian Steve Downie.
